Creed · Aventus Cologne

A few weeks ago I was invited to a media preview of Creed’s latest launch, Aventus Cologne. The event took place at Marcus, Montréal’s hottest eating spot, located at the brand new Four Season’s Hotel — which conveniently happens to adjoin Holt Renfrew Ogilvy, and thus makes it all too easy to not only dine well, but then go and indulge is a little “retail therapy”.

Fragrance with a side of lunch
No, I didn’t eat all this — these are mine & my husband’s selections that we shared

When a bathroom is THIS opulent, a selfie is basically mandatory, no?

The Creed boutique located at Montréal’s Holt Renfrew Ogilvy store

For a few years now I’ve been regularly visiting the Creed fragrance counter, but I’ve yet to pull the trigger and actually purchase a bottle — mainly I haven’t been able to choose between two I really want. So when the media invitation dropped into my inbox, I wasn’t about to say no — especially since the location was also on my radar of places I wanted to try. In a nutshell: a beautiful ambiance with excellent food, the best company (my husband was my date) and a new Creed fragrance to learn about. THAT’s my kind of beauty lunch.

Aventus Cologne (CAN $541.00/100 ml) | Founded in London as a tailoring house in 1760, Creed subsequently moved to Paris and switched to fragrance in the 1980’s. Created by Olivier Creed who is a direct descendant of the brand’s founder, Aventus Cologne follows the incredible success of Aventus (2010), and draws inspiration from the “legendary life of a historic emperor celebrating strength, power and success“. Key notes include:

  • Top: Ginger, Mandarin, Baie Rose
  • Heart: Patchouli, Indian Sandalwood, Vetiver
  • Base: Styrax, Birch, Musk, Tonka Bean

I haven’t had the opportunity to smell the original Aventus, but I’m told that this version definitely shares the same DNA. Said to fall in the woody/fresh category, Aventus Cologne is meant to be unisex and somewhat lighter in nature, but still quite full-bodied just the same — despite being a cologne. As someone who frequently wears traditionally labelled men’s fragrances, I could tell at first sniff that I would have a hard time giving this one to my husband, but the beauty of this gifting is that I can “borrow” it anytime I please. Which is often. Also, the bottle may or may not be now permanently residing in my collection. #noshame

I see fragrance bottles as art, and sculptural details such as the embossed lettering and faux-leather wrapping on the body of Aventus Cologne, along with the silver label and etched crest on the cap, are all touches that I truly appreciate.

The fragrance I reach for on any given day will depend on a variety of things: what I’m wearing, whether I’m going out or not, and most importantly, my mood. And while I do have my favourites, I also like to switch things up; helps to keep things interesting. What makes wearing Aventus Cologne special to me, is how it connects me on a whole new level with my husband, who also likes wearing it. So while pricey, think of it this way: it’s like getting a twofer (not a bad way to justify the cost, wouldn’t you agree?)
