Guerlain · Abeille Royale

Two things that I am incredibly passionate about, are skincare and animals. So when this package from Guerlain arrived containing the rebooted versions of their Abeille Royale moisturizers, I was ecstatic. Why? Well, because not have I had amazing results from their past skincare ranges, but I couldn’t be happier to support a brand who has taken such strides to protect our world’s bee populations. For me, this is a total win-win.

The ‘bee’ symbol has a long association with Guerlain, and something the brand has known for many years is that the bee population desperately needs our help. Ouessant Island in France off the coast of Brittany, is a protected haven for the rare Black Bee species where Guerlain maintains a hand in their survival — even setting up protected areas where the brand can sustainably harvest what they need, while also protecting these precious creatures. This past October 14th, it was announced that the House has partnered with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in an initiative that will span 5 years and across 4 countries, a landmark move that will help teach others how to properly safeguard and preserve our world’s bee populations. From where I stand, this fact alone is enough for my support.

Several weeks ago I was sent the most thoughtful package from Guerlain that came housed in a “bee hive” made of reclaimed pallet wood and one which I’ll definitely be repurposing to hold other items. Inside were the 2 face creams, each nestled in trays that also serve a dual purpose, since they can be reused as photo frames. See? It’s details like this that show me the brand actually cares and is not just paying lip service.

One of the photo frame ‘trays’ — perfect for keeping everything in place too

Even though the above items were not sent in the package, I wanted to include them in this post as they perfectly compliment both the Abeille Royale Day & Night Creams.

Youth Watery Oil (CAN $129.00/30 ml) | I was first introduced to this product almost 2 years ago and apart from a cursory application, it has basically sat on my shelf ignored. When I pulled it out to start testing it with the rest of this regimen, I realized how much I had been missing out on — but in my defence, I receive so many skincare items that there’s only so much I can test at any given time. Still … I can literally kick myself for not having incorporating this earlier. But I digress …

Housed in a hexagonally shaped glass bottle (the bee connection, remember?) and dispensed via a dropper, this offers skin “all the power of Guerlain-exclusive ingredients: Ouessant Black Bee Honey and exclusive Royal Jelly. This revolutionary formula combines the power of a serum, the richness of an oil and the freshness of a lotion. The skin appears instantly smoother, plumper and revitalized. Replenishing micro-drops of oil are released at the very last minute, leaving the complexion looking radiant. The skin feels incredibly silky and baby-soft to the touch“. I say that this is liquid GOLD. You need to give the contents a quick shake, then the directions say to dispense 2-3 drops (warmed up between your palms prior to application) but I’ve been going in with more as I also like applying it along my neck and décolletage. Once applied, it takes a few minutes to become fully absorbed and I find that it works beautifully under both the Day & Night Creams, adding an extra protective layer and leaving my skin feeling velvety smooth and almost ‘bouncy’ to the touch.

Black Bee Honey Balm (CAN $76.00) | Consider this your skin’s secret weapon. This balm — which can also be used on elbows, heels & hands — has a high concentration of Ouessant Black Bee honey and royal jelly, and is ultra-nourishing, especially for skin that is not only dehydrated but also weakened from environmental stressors, excessive humidity, as well as bone-numbing cold weather. It’s even effective and safe enough to use post cosmetic procedures. With a soft honey fragrance, the texture is rich yet not greasy, and a little definitely goes a long way. I like to apply this to my face, neck and décolletage at least once a week — but that number may increase as the weather gets colder. Good for all skin types, even sensitive.

Repairing Honey Gel Mask (CAN $83.00) | Loaded with Ouessant Black Bee honey and royal jelly, this mask can be used at least once a week or whenever you feel your skin can benefit from an extra shot of moisture. With its smooth yet rich texture, you don’t need to apply a large amount to get results and I love that it doesn’t get washed off; after 10 minutes wait time, you can simply massage anything left over into the skin — although I find it gets absorbed on its own without any help. Bearing a yummy soft honey fragrance, this leaves my skin feeling velvety and can be applied in place of a daytime moisturizer, or layered under an evening cream for even more hydration.

Abeille Royale Day Cream (CAN $180.00/50 ml) | Housed in a honeycomb shaped glass jar made of less recycled material than previous versions, this cream has a buttery ‘pudding-like’ texture and aims to tackle: dullness, uneven texture, fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of firmness/elasticity. Slightly cool to the touch initially, the formula contains Vitamin C (for its brightening properties), along with Ouessant Black Bee royal jelly (a natural source of protein, lipids & vitamins along with exceptional hydrating properties) and honey (which aids in repairing and protecting skin barrier). When it comes to skincare, I look for a product that not only delivers on its claims, but one that leaves my skin feeling 100% nourished. As crazy as this may sound, even after the first day of testing, I run the back of my hand along my skin and if it feels plump & velvety smooth, then I know the product is giving me what I look for — and I certainly got that here. Lightly honey scented and absorbed within a few minutes, I find that my skin not only appears smoother and more even toned, but brighter and with fine lines subtly filled in, which also means any makeup I apply on top looks better too.

Abeille Royale Night Cream (CAN $206.00/50 ml) | Differentiated from the Day Cream via an amber-coloured glass honeycomb-shaped jar, the texture here is richer and somewhat denser and bears a similar honey fragrance. With an even higher concentration of Ouessant Black Bee royal jelly and honey, the formula also contains a Vitamin E derivative which is effective at combating skin’s lack of firmness and elasticity. Make no mistake about it; this cream is lush and as the last step in my nighttime skincare routine, it works overnight to help in the body’s cell renewal process AND I wake up to incredibly smooth skin that feels deliciously plump to the touch. I’ll even go so far as to say my skin looks refreshed in the morning — and that’s a small miracle in & of itself.

Yes, I am a skincare freak and if there’s anything I hope I’ve passed along to my daughter, is that you can’t protect your body’s largest organ enough. I often get asked what the secret to looking your best is, and my main answer is always: moisture — whether that’s for your body, face, hands, or hair. Guerlain’s Abeille Royale range may be pricey but from where I stand, if a product delivers, then it’s worth the splurge. And every single item featured today delivers in an epic way. The bee-saving initiative associated with this range only sweetens the deal further and that makes it worth your time to check out as well.
