The newest addition to the Mon Guerlain family is Eau de Parfum Intense, and apart from the fact that one of the co-creaters is a friend, this fragrance includes notes I personally love AND the muse behind it happens to be Angelina Jolie, aka: one of my ultimate girl crushes. Let’s just say that I was in even before I actually smelled it … then it was pure love.

Mon Guerlain Eau de Parfum Intense (CAN $131.00/50 ml) | Created by master perfumer Thierry Wasser (a man I’ve had the pleasure of meeting several times & can call a friend) along with Delphine Jelk, this latest flanker is housed in the range’s iconic quadrilobé bottle first created in 1908 inspired by an alchemists bottle, and owes its name to the stopper which is crafted from one piece that’s shaped to resemble 4 lobes. This version is differentiated from its predecessors via a maroon-coloured band around the neck, along with a dark rose juice. With a higher concentration of vanilla to call forth a more sensual expression, key notes include:
- Top: Lavender, Mandarin Orange, Bergamot
- Heart: Iris, Rose, Jasmine Sambac, Tahitian Vanilla, Madagascar Vanilla
- Base: Patchouli, Benzoin, Licorice, Coumarin, Australian Sandalwood, White Musk
You know from the very first spritz that this is a perfume; there’s nothing lukewarm about it. But there’s an interesting way that Intense develops, with the initial lavender blast giving way to something almost green & fresh — then just as you’ve pinpointed that note, the fragrance morphs once again and takes on a lush velvety-ness with that double dose of vanilla. The powdery tone comes through in the dry down, but this is definitely tempered by the earthiness of both the patchouli and sandalwood for a finish that’s absolutely sexy, and never grandma-musty.

A Mon Guerlain family reunion
Out of all the Mon Guerlain iterations, the one in my collection I’ve reached for the most has been the original … but that all changed when Intense arrived. This is everything I wanted the original to be: heavier on the vanilla, lighter in the powdery notes, and drop dead sexy — but still wearable during the day by going in lightly. We don’t want to start a riot now, do we? If like me you have a thing for balsamic/sweet/spicy scents (and Angelina Jolie), then you need to check Intense out. Then go ahead and add it to your Christmas wishlist and start dropping major hints.
