YSL recently launched Libre, a unisex fragrance built around lavender — a plant known for its calming properties, but there’s nothing sleepy about this scent; it’s rather more “sensual romp through the lavender fields” than aromatherapeutic. For today’s post, I’ve decided to pair it with the new Volupté Plump-In-Balm lippies, because … why not?

Libre Eau de Parfum (CAN $125.00/50 ml) | A few weeks ago I was invited to the media preview launch for this fragrance (the event also included a few more releases from L’Oréal’s luxury ranges), and my first impression upon spotting the bottle was WOW. There’s an elegance-meets-rocker vibe going on with the asymmetrical cap, the gold ‘chain‘ around the neck, and the screwed-on iconic ‘Casandre‘ logo banding the hefty glass bottle. The pale golden colour of the juice thankfully does not distract from all these sculptural details, but instead acts as complement to the entire package. Key notes include:
- Top: Orange, Lavender, Black Currant, Petitgrain
- Heart: Jasmine, Lavender, Orange Blossom
- Base: Madagascar Vanilla, Cedar, Ambergris, Musk
The initial spritz opens up quite redolently and while the lavender is definitely detectable, it seems sweetened by the fruity notes — a good thing too, as this ingredient can sometimes come off as medicinal. About 10-15 minutes later, the scent starts to wind into something headier and almost nostalgic; for some reason at this point in the wearing, I’m reminded of the days of high school dances, and the excitement of FINALLY getting to slow dance with that cute guy. Interestingly enough, the creamy tones of the base show up in the dry down, but it’s almost as if Libre‘s top notes make one final appearance before fading away. I’ve actually never had that happen with a fragrance before, which makes this one quite unique.
Volupté Plump-In-Colour Plumping Lip Balm (CAN $50.00/each) | Available in several more shades, these come housed in gorgeous elegant silver cases that have a colour-coded band enhanced with the iconic Casandre logo, while each tube twists up to reveal the cutest heart at its core. This newest addition to the Volupté family has been created to be a multitasking product: a rich balm that nourishes lips, provides a slight plumping effect, and adds a gentle hit of colour & shine. The formula includes Peppermint Oil which gives an initial cooling sensation, Hyaluronic Acid to lock in moisture, and Coconut Oil for nourishing comfortable wear. These hybrid products feature a ‘black‘ heart: that’s where the volumizing part resides, wrapped in the balmy colour & vitamin-infused portion. Regarding application, they literally glide along the lips like butter and even though there’s plenty of emollience, they don’t migrate into any fine lines surrounding lips. The deeper shades will provide colour far longer than the lighter hues, but both of these that I tested out offered the same long-term nourishing benefits.
- 1 Mad Nude – universal warm nude
- 6 Lunatic Red – blue red
I’ve said before that fragrance is an important part of my life and apart from the olfactory experience, there’s the artistic aspect that appeals to me as well — the Libre bottle can easily be classified as art. The fragrance is different that what I normally reach for, but the inclusion of the woody/vanilla notes tempers the herbal-floral composition and turns it into something I want to sport — but I have to go in lightly, as this baby packs a punch. With regards to the lippies, I’m all about that balm life and when it comes packaged in something as display-worthy as this — not to mention how wonderfully each performs, I’m 100% in.
