With Christmas just one month away (what???), it felt appropriate to review a few fragrances that I’ve had hanging about but never got around to … until now. I personally enjoy having perfume options and what’s more, I’ve long felt that Mugler not only makes some truly original scents that come with a decent price tag, but the bottles are UNBELIEVABLY display-worthy too — also totally perfect for gift-giving, wouldn’t you agree?

Alien Eau de Parfum (CAN $145.00/60 ml) | Launched 13 years after the phenomenal success of Angel, Alien was created by Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyere. Part of the amber-woody-floral family, this fragrance is unmistakably otherworldly — from the distinctive bottle with its vaguely alien-like features, to the rich amethyst colour of the glass with its regal and talisman-like vibes. The scent it unlike anything I own or have even smelled before; with its combination of white flowers, woody notes, and amber undertone, the first spritz is almost a study of contradictions and even bears a slight acridity but then almost immediately begins to evolve and soften. Key ingredients include:

• Top note: Sambac Jasmine
• Heart note: Cashmeran Wood
• Base note: White Amber

Alien Man Eau de Toilette (CAN $99.00/100 ml) | Launched in 2018 and part of the leather-woody-aromatic family, the nose behind this fragrance is Jean-Christophe Herault. Housed in a dark indigo coloured bottle, this shape has less of a sculptural feel than Alien, and comes across as more architectural instead. This scent is said to have a “sensual vibration” from the leather and woody notes to compliment the “magnetic vibration” from the white amber. There’s a sweetness that I pick up from its spicy accord that almost seems to weave in & out throughout all stages of this fragrance, and yet rising above that is a distinct green note that adds a bright fizzy tone. I can’t say it’s as futuristic as its feminine counterpart, but there’s definitely something unique going on … an inexplicable je-ne-sais-quois that Monsieur Mugler does so absolutely brilliantly. • Leather, Cashmeran Wood, Osmanthus, Beechwood, Dill, White Amber

Alien Man Fusion Eau de Toilette (CAN $90.00/100 ml) | Launched earlier this year (2019), this is part of the woody/spicy family. Before I dive into its specifics, can we take a moment and admire the stunning eclectric blue shade of this bottle? Where Alien Man is moody and even a bit sullen, Alien Man Fusion is all about charm and fun — traits that are evident by the overall brightness you pick up from initial spritzing. And while the DNA of this fragrance remains true to the original, it’s been tweaked just enough to help it stand apart; still quite masculine but rounded out by a softer warm-skin finish. Key ingredients include:

• Top notes: Ginger, Cinnamon
• Heart notes: Osmanthus, Leather
• Base notes: Coffee, Beechwood

I’ve said often enough that fragrance is highly subjective and so basically that means you need to do your research before buying; I can only present the specifics. Most of us know what scent groups we’re attracted to and so knowing the components of a fragrance — such as the three presented in today’s post — hopefully makes it easy to narrow things down. Then again, I’ve been known to buy a bottle simply because of its artistic merit, and that aesthetic is so clearly evident with all these selections. As I mentioned at the top, Christmas is near so if you’ve got perfume lovers on your list, here’s a few options to consider. Enjoy!
