Several weeks ago Stila launched the Happy Hour & After Hours Eye Shadow Palettes as part of their Summer Collection, obviously inspired by a rip-roaring good time if the names are anything to judge by. Personally, I find the shades to be wearable regardless of season … and no cocktail attire required either.

Both palettes comes housed in matte gold compact cases with a full sized mirror on the inner lid, and 12 generously sized shades. I personally find these cases to be rather bulky and thus not that travel friendly, but on the plus side this also means that the individual eyeshadows can be bigger than usual. The textures range between matte, shimmer, & glitter, and have a good selection of both cool and warm tones. The formula contains ‘micronized silicone-treated pigments for superior blending and ultra-rich uniform colour and dimension‘. I don’t know about the micronized part (I’m not even sure what it means, to be honest), but I can defining vouch for the high colour saturation of each shade as well as how beautifully they apply, displaying full-on coverage per swipe. All are easy to blend out but I do suggest tapping excess off your brush first to avoid any fall down. Staying power, when applied over primer, is also excellent.
Happy Hour Eye Shadow Palette (CAN $69.00) | To my eyes, this palette runs a touch cooler than After Hours, but there are several shades here that can easily swing warm as well. All swatches below were done with just one swipe — I’d say that’s pretty impressive, no?
*Note that this palette appears to be available only Shopper’s Drug Mart/Beauty Boutique

After Hours Eye Shadow Palette (CAN $69.00) | The more obvious warmer leaning palette of the two, this group only contains 3 mattes (versus 4 in Happy Hour) but they’re all quite versatile and make excellent transition shades too. One thing that should be noted is how beautifully complex the shimmery shades are — pictures really don’t do them justice and they need to be seen in person.
- Toast – champagne glitter
- Last Round – warm nude matte
- Sunset Soirée – burnt orange shimmer
- Pink Bubbly – baby pink shimmer
- Velvet Rope – garnet glitter
- Cash Out – jade glitter
- Bellini – light peach shimmer

- Tomorrow’s Tale – reddish brown matte
- After Party – smoky quarts glitter
I confess to not owning many Stila products and even though I already have a bajillion eyeshadow palettes, it’s nice discovering beauties such as these that contain plenty of shades in a mix of finishes, all displaying a superb quality, and finally, come with a wallet-friendly price tag. I Personally feel that either would be great for anyone interested in exploring this brand’s eyeshadows but barring that, they’d also make a great addition to your Christmas wish list too (and no, it’s not too early to start dropping hints).
